What is Suboxone®?

Suboxone® is a medication specifically designed to treat opioid use disorder. Approved by the FDA, it combines buprenorphine, which reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms, with naloxone. This safeguard prevents misuse by ensuring the medication is taken as directed. Together, these ingredients help individuals stay committed to their recovery journey, providing the support needed to overcome opioid dependence and achieve long-term wellness.

Suboxone® is a long-lasting buprenorphine medication administered through either a sublingual tablet or film. Other forms of buprenorphine are available via monthly injection. Each dose of Suboxone® typically works for about 4 hours.

How Does Suboxone® Work?

Suboxone® is a partial opioid agonist, meaning it partially activates opioid receptors in the brain to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms without creating the euphoric effects that can be associated with opioids, helping patients focus on their recovery with a clear mind. Buprenorphine, the active ingredient, attaches to the same neuroreceptors as other opioids, forming a stronger bond that blocks the abused substance.

Potential Side Effects

Like other medications, there is a possibility of experiencing side effects while using Suboxone®. However, most patients using Suboxone® do not notice side effects; if they do, they report that they clear up within a few days. While there is a chance of nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and headaches, side effects are typically short-lived.

The Benefits of Suboxone® Medication-Assisted Treatment

All medication-assisted treatment options are effective ways to help patients stay in treatment, avoid relapse, and reduce withdrawal symptoms.

Minimized Relapse and Misuse Potential

By reducing cravings for illicit opioids without the euphoric effects associated with them, Suboxone® minimizes the chance for relapse or misuse.

Reduced Withdrawal Symptoms

Unlike other medication-assisted treatment options, buprenorphine medications like Suboxone® effectively alleviate withdrawal symptoms to help patients recover without discomfort.

Extended Treatment Time

The reduced cravings, withdrawal symptoms, and relapse potential of Suboxone® ensure that patients can focus their energy on other aspects of their recovery, including counseling and therapy.
