What is Sublocade™?

Sublocade™ stands out as an injectable form of buprenorphine, distinct from other medications. Its monthly injection, approved by the FDA, effectively reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms, allowing patients to stay in treatment without the discomfort of withdrawal or the inconvenience of taking a medication every day. When combined with counseling, Sublocade™ significantly increases the chances of long-lasting recovery in those struggling with opioid use.

How Does Sublocade™ Work?

Sublocade™ injections use the active ingredient buprenorphine, which is a partial opioid agonist. It partially activates opioid receptors in the brain to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms without creating the euphoric effects associated with illicit opioids, helping patients focus on their recovery with a clear mind. Buprenorphine attaches to the same neuroreceptors as other opioids, forming a stronger bond that blocks other opioids.

Unlike other buprenorphine medications, which can be taken as a daily sublingual film or tablet, Sublocade™ is injected monthly in a clinical setting by a healthcare professional.

Potential Side Effects

Like other medications, there is a possibility of experiencing side effects while using Sublocade™. Luckily, most patients using Sublocade™ do not notice side effects; if they do, they report that they clear up within a few days. While there is a chance of nausea, vomiting, constipation, and headaches, side effects are typically short-lived.

The Benefits of Sublocade™ Injection Treatment

All medication-assisted treatment options are effective ways to help patients stay in treatment, avoid relapse, and reduce withdrawal symptoms.

Minimized Relapse and Misuse Potential

Sublocade™ offers a unique advantage over other medication-assisted treatments. By binding to the same neuroreceptors as other opioids without the euphoric effects, it becomes less appealing as a drug and more helpful for patients looking to avoid relapse and achieve long-term recovery.

Reduced Withdrawal Symptoms

Unlike other medication-assisted treatment options, buprenorphine medications like Sublocade™ effectively alleviate withdrawal symptoms to help patients recover without discomfort.

Extended Treatment Time

The reduced cravings, withdrawal symptoms, and relapse potential of Sublocade™ ensure that patients can focus their energy on other aspects of their recovery, including counseling and therapy.

Sublocade™ Administration and Dosage

Sublocade™ is available in two different doses:

Sublocade™ is a medication prescribed by a healthcare provider and administered in a clinical setting by a professional. Patients receive a dose once monthly, with at least 26 days between each dose. The FDA approved dosing regimen is 300mg > 300mg > 100mg thereafter, so all patients try that at least once. If they go to the 100mg and have ongoing withdrawal, they go back to the 300mg injection.

Exploring Medication-Assisted Treatment:Is Sublocade™ Right for You?

Sublocade™ is an effective medication-assisted treatment option that a healthcare provider prescribes. Because it is only injected once monthly, it’s a helpful choice for those with busy schedules. At Community Medical Services, we believe in a personalized approach to medication-assisted treatment.
